Because AArch64 mandates fixed-length 32-bit instructions aligned to 4-byte boundaries, the instruction pointer can never land in the middle of an instruction during live execution. Windows exploits this by inserting 12 bytes of padding before every function entry point for an atomic 3-instruction trampoline using scratch register xip0, completely avoiding the multi-byte instruction-boundary decoding and 2-byte relative jump gymnastics required by variable-length x86. devblogs.microsoft.com
In 1964, Donald Bitzer invented the plasma display for UIUC’s PLATO system because cathode ray tubes required external computer memory to refresh the screen 30 times a second—an unbearable cost when memory was priced by the byte. Plasma’s bistable gas discharge cells acted as their own physical memory elements, eliminating the refresh bandwidth bottleneck. Once DRAM rode Moore's Law down the cost curve, the core economic reason for plasma vanished, leaving it to fight LCDs solely on picture quality until LCD manufacturing scale and yield learning curves wiped it out. construction-physics.com
Micromanufacturing has historically been trapped between traditional mechanical machining (limited to 10s of microns) and semiconductor lithography (planar, mask-bound, and restricted to silicon chemistry). Atomic Machines emerged from 6 years in stealth with the "Matter Compiler," an all-digital platform that fabricates 3D micro-machines with moving parts down to single-digit microns directly from code without masks, molds, or per-product tooling. Their first commercial device is the PrimeSwitch (PS-150): an electromechanical power relay for 800-volt AI data center architectures that opens in 50 microseconds, measuring 9.5 mm across and 3 mm thick. atomicmachines.com
Standard cellular protocols assume stationary base stations, causing packet collisions and dropped calls when communicating with low-Earth orbit satellites moving at 17,000 mph. Because Starlink uses phased-array narrow beams, a standard smartphone at the center of a spot beam is physically closer to the satellite than a phone at the perimeter, creating microsecond propagation discrepancies across beam footprints. SpaceX patent US 12,757,141 B1 solves this on the satellite rather than the handset: an onboard digital buffer dynamically calculates geometric distance for each active beam, holding packets from faster, closer beams so that signals across all beams arrive simultaneously with the slowest beam. This creates a uniform artificial latency plane that allows unmodified LTE smartphones to maintain synchronized connections from orbit. patents.google.com
While the American AI strategy models development as a winner-take-all race toward artificial general intelligence through LLM scaling, Chinese policy explicitly rejects this framing. China’s AI+ Plan does not mention America or race dynamics; instead, it subsidizes open-weight foundation models via local compute vouchers to drive broad industrial diffusion into manufacturing and domestic supply chains. The divergence is between a centralized moonshot for frontier superintelligence and decentralized technological integration into physical industry. palladiummag.com
The question is not why Bronze Age empires fell, but why nothing like them returned for centuries. The causes of the Bronze Age collapse are debated — droughts, the Sea Peoples, internal revolts. But a decisive factor was iron. While the tin required for bronze was concentrated in rare deposits and easily monopolized by imperial courts, iron is the 4th most abundant element in Earth’s crust. In contrast to bronze, iron democratized violence. Because iron could be produced locally, imperial centers permanently lost their monopoly on the tools of war, ending the centralized equilibrium that had sustained Bronze Age states for 1,000 years. worksinprogress.news
Across 26 prompt conditions tested on Rust implementations (TLA+, Alloy, Verus, Kani, fuzzing), default unprompted coding outperformed most specialized verification prompts. Agents overwhelmingly wrote code first rather than modeling upfront: 75 out of 80 agents told to use TLA+ implemented in Rust first, then used TLA+ post-hoc on trivial functions where pass rates were already 99.6%, while completely failing to model concurrency, event queues, and state machines where the actual failures occurred. danluu.com
We cannot suddenly move the goalposts and pretend that proving theorems was never the point, or that open problems were merely proxies for mathematical understanding. For quite some time, the implicit social contract has been that society pays us to exercise our intellectual curiosity and we, in return, provide skills and practical knowledge. In a world where models match or exceed humans at proving theorems, that social contract needs to be renegotiated with humility rather than entitlement. Even if this future supports fewer professional mathematicians, it could nevertheless support a much richer mathematical life. theorydish.blog
In economic history, DeLong and Shleifer show that in second-millennium Europe, city growth correlated with non-absolutist government. Unlike the urban elites of antiquity, medieval elites were rural, making urban population a proxy for commerce rather than imperial extraction. London grew as a river crossing and commercial center before Norman royal institutions centralized around Westminster, while Hanseatic cities formed entirely along maritime trade networks, obtaining imperial immediacy as functional city-states dependent on imported grain from lands they did not rule. pedestrianobservations.com
The key thing to understand about agents is that they are an AI with access to a computer: probabilistic LLMs leveraging deterministic computers to do computer things. When distribution became free, publishing became abundant and curation was scarce. With agents, the raw capability to execute tasks is becoming abundant; what remains scarce is human volition. While base models are substitutable commodities, agents improve with accumulated user context, and that persistent context becomes the dominant switching cost. stratechery.com
Engineers at UT Austin modified wild PET-eating bacterial enzymes to create FAST-PETase, which breaks down polyethylene terephthalate in under 24 hours instead of six weeks. Similar bioleaching strains extract rare earth metals 73 percent faster than natural microbes. Yet environmental deployment remains frozen under the 1986 Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA): of more than 240 applications filed between 1987 and 2018, almost none were approved, because any intergeneric marker gene classifies the living organism as a synthetic chemical. worksinprogress.news
Given our best current data, the AI self-improvement loop would need to be roughly 5–10× stronger to sustain itself, let alone run away. I expect incredibly rapid AI progress by the standards of nearly any other technology. But the evidence we have doesn’t suggest a sudden explosion to incomprehensible superintelligence anytime soon. noahpinion.blog
Global carbon emissions and fossil fuel consumption are dropping in their first annual decline since the peak of the 2020 coronavirus lockdowns. Persistent supply shortages and high energy prices are suppressing oil and gas usage worldwide, with crude demand averaging 102 million barrels per day compared to 91 million in 2020. marginalrevolution.com
Here, in five waves of panel data ( N = 1,966 US adults), we examined associations between life satisfaction and self-reported use of ten common social technologies measured every 3 months on a six-point frequency scale from ‘I did not use’ to ‘multiple times daily’. At this measurement level and timescale, Bayesian and frequentist random-intercept cross-lagged panel models showed little credible evidence that any social technology use predicts subsequent life satisfaction. In the reverse direction, increases in life satisfaction predicted only modest increases in (video) calling in select demographic groups. In analyses comparing different people, frequency of texting was associated with higher life satisfaction, whereas frequency of YouTube and TikTok use was associated with lower life satisfaction. Despite limited ability to detect within-person change due to temporal stability in responses, the absence of cross-lagged effects is informative: there is scant evidence of a meaningful relationship between social technology use and subsequent life satisfaction. marginalrevolution.com
Inside a transformer, computation happens as geometric transformations across a high-dimensional continuous latent space. But under standard chain-of-thought, the model is forced at each cycle to collapse that rich latent state through a bottleneck: projecting it into discrete tokens—twenty-six glyphs invented by Phoenician turquoise miners in 1800 BC—written onto an English scratchpad, which must then be re-embedded back into latent space before the next layer can touch it.
This bottleneck is a severe capability tax, but an accidental alignment godsend: humans can monitor intermediate thinking in plain English. The specter of 'neuralese recurrence' is what happens when you cut out the middleman and loop the computation directly within latent space—letting the model circulate raw activation vectors indefinitely without ever translating into human glyphs. It unbottlenecks thought, but leaves us completely blind, because interpretability has no dictionary for arbitrary thousand-dimensional latent trajectories. astralcodexten.com
Anthropic has announced that it’s now watermarking the outputs of Claude, using a scheme based on Google’s SynthID, which is in turn based on the Gumbel Softmax scheme that I proposed at OpenAI back in 2022—as far as I know, the first LLM watermarking proposal, though far from the last one. scottaaronson.blog
No-one knew how deep the highest large lake in the Sierra was, so we carried a packraft over Shepherd Pass and found out: 117 m. 93 km walked, 6 days, and 4.7 km paddled at 12,900 ft.
Wikipedia claimed not to know. We commissioned satellite imagery to confirm it was ice-free, hauled an ultralight packraft and sonar sounder up the brutal Shepherd Pass trail, and sounded the basin. USGS topography predicted 25–40 meters. The actual sounding: 117 meters (384 feet), making it the 25th deepest natural lake in North America, and by far the deepest lake on Earth for its surface area. caseyhandmer.com
Polybius famously claimed that Gaulish Celtic warriors were crippled in battle because their longswords bent upon impact and had to be straightened with the foot. Metallurgical spectroscopy of excavated La Tène Iron Age blades refutes the Roman account as wartime propaganda: Celtic smiths had mastered pattern welding, carburized high-carbon cutting edges, and quench hardening, producing weapons so mechanically superior that the Roman army discarded their native blades to adopt the Celtic design as the gladius Hispaniensis. wikipedia.org
Traditional RGB and HSL color models suffer from severe perceptual non-uniformity: yellow and blue share identical nominal lightness values in HSL despite human photoreceptors perceiving yellow as dramatically brighter. In Björn Ottosson's OKLCH color space, perceived lightness and chroma are mathematically decoupled from polar hue angle, enabling programmatic palette shifts and algorithmic contrast ratios that stay aesthetically invariant and WCAG-compliant without manual eye-tuning. bottosson.github.io
Feedforward active noise cancellation in headphones operates against one of the tightest physical latency ceilings in commercial computing: with sound traveling through air at 343 m/s, an acoustic disturbance takes approximately 44 microseconds to physically traverse the 15 mm gap between an exterior microphone and the ear canal. Sampling, ADC conversion, DSP phase inversion, and speaker diaphragm actuation must complete entirely within that 40-microsecond window before the pressure wavefront passes the eardrum. wikipedia.org
